Blink 182 History

Blink 182 was formed originally with bassist and singer Mark Hoppus and singer and guitarist Tom DeLonge. Hoppus's sister knew he was interested in starting a band and she thought her friend DeLonge might be the perfect match for him. They started jamming in DeLonge's garage, writing what would become some of the first Blink 182 songs. After awhile, they felt like it was time to start a real band and they joined up with a drummer they met at a battle of the bands, Scott Raynor. They went by the name Duck Tape for awhile before finally making the change to Blink 182.

The band released a series of demos and a mildly successful independent record but it was not until the release of their 1996 album Dude Ranch that they got a taste of fame. The album was released by MCA and featured the hit single "Dammit," which remains a fan favorite. It seemed like nothing could stop them when they set out on tour with Dude Ranch but their drummer, Scott Raynor, began drinking excessively, putting the band at risk. The supporting band for the tour was The Aquabats and their drummer, Travis Barker, was in the perfect place at the perfect time to join the up and coming Blink 182.

Blink 182 was ready to take on the music work when they went back into the studio with a new drummer and a fresh batch of songs to turn out Enema of the State, the album that really skyrocketed them to success. It seemed like there was nowhere to go but up and they enjoyed incredible success but the strain of being famous and being on the road began to take its toll and, in 2005, the band announced that they were going on an indefinite hiatus. The relationships between members suffered greatly but the true test of their friendships came when tragedy struck. Jerry Finn, who had produced many of their albums, passed away suddenly and then, shortly after, Travis Barker was lucky to be alive after a plane crash. While at the 51st Grammy Awards, the members of Blink 182 gave their fans a thrill by appearing together and announcing their reconciliation.

Once they decided to get back together, Blink 182 decided to hit the road. They went on a national summer tour with Weezer and Fall Out Boy. The tour, which sold out most of its dates across the country, was a great motivator to get the band back in the studio and working on their first record in six years.
