Carolina Hurricanes History
Carolina has a rather interesting history, as the team relocated several times before finding its current home. Originating in 1972, the franchise was originally placed in Boston as a member of the WHA. However, fan support and scheduling conflicts with the already established Bruins would leave ownership soon looking for a new home. In 1975, the decision was made to move the team to Harford, Connecticut.
In 1979, the NHL absorbed franchises from the WHA. Now part of the NHL, the Hartford Whalers found themselves being overmatched by foes on a regular basis. Even with the expanded playoff format, the Whalers would manage to win only one playoff game during the time spent in Connecticut. Local sports fans started to drift away from the team and ownership was once again forced to move the team to a new city.
In 1997, the Whalers relocated to Carolina and became the Hurricanes. This was truly a new beginning for the team and its fortunes would begin to change immediately. The team started to climb in the standings and would welcome the new century with a playoff berth. Finally, in 2002, the team would break through and win the conference. However, like many first time conference winners, the Hurricanes would fail to win the Stanley Cup. In 2006, the team repeated the feat, but this time defeated the Edmonton Oilers in seven games to win the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history.
