Charlotte Bobcats History

Charlotte had NBA action it town until 2002, when the Hornets relocated to New Orleans. The city desperately wanted a new team in town and was finally awarded the Bobcats for the 2004-05 season. The team made history being one of the first major sports franchises owned by an African-American owner, Robert Johnson.

Life was not easy in the very beginning, as the Bobcats struggled to compete in the league. Johnson decided to bring in Michael Jordan as Head of Basketball Operations in 2006. With Jordan serving as the main decision maker, the team started to undergo a major face lift with coaches and front office personnel. However, the hiring of Sam Vincent as head coach in 2007 would only lead to more frustration for the young franchise.

Jordan elected to bring in veteran coach Larry Brown in 2008, and the impact was immediate. Brown's system seemed to fall perfectly into place with the players and the Bobcats finally started experiencing what it felt like to win. Brown's first season saw the team miss the playoffs by only four games. In his second full season as head coach, the Bobcats would make a trip to post-season play.

The team was sold outright to Jordan in 2010 and the basketball legend finally had full control of his very own franchise. However, the beginning of the 2010-11 season saw much frustration at all levels. With the team being ten games under .500 after only 28 games played, Brown decided to step down. Paul Silas was immediately hired as head coach to replace Brown. The team missed the playoffs that season, but hopes to regain the momentum created after the 2009-10 season.
