Colorado Avalanche History

The Avalanche originated in 1972, but initially played out of Quebec. The team was a member of the World Hockey Association (WHA), but that league met with little success. After less than a decade, the league would be integrated into the NHL in 1979. While the Nordiques made the playoffs with some regularity after the merger, a date with the Stanley Cup did not seem to be in the cards. Eventually, the team would fall completely from grace and reside in the bottom of the standings.

Good fortunes did lie ahead, though, but not in the way that usually happens for franchises. The Nordiques owned the rights to Eric Lindros, who made his intentions quite clear regarding playing for the hapless franchise. Philadelphia stepped up with an offer that could literally turn the organization around overnight. Little did Philadelphia know that it had a player that would achieve much more than Lindros during his career. That player, of course, was Peter Forsberg, one of five players in the deal. While Lindros was a great player, his career was littered with injuries and he would never lead Philadelphia to another Stanley Cup win. Forsberg, however, would be the cornerstone of this franchise.

The Nordiques would continue to experience financial difficulties, as fans were still not coming back. Ownership decided to move the team to Denver in 1995. This new beginning also marked a change in the team name to the Avalanche. Where the Nordiques could not win anything, all the Avalanche ever did was win. The Avalanche became a perennial playoff contender and Forsberg and company would go on to win two championships in 1996 and 2001.
