Detroit Pistons History
Originating in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the Pistons first hit the court in 1941. However, the team was not made part of the NBA until 1948. In 1957, the team was moved from Fort Wayne to Detroit, Michigan. Then owner Fred Zollner actually played an integral part in the formation of the NBA, piecing together franchises from the NBL and BAA. The move to Detroit was a much-needed move, in that the team had been linked to illegal point shaving while in Indiana.
The decades of the 1960s and 1970s were not a fruitful time for the Pistons. Playing in a division with then powerhouse Milwaukee and defensive juggernaut Chicago, the Pistons had a very tough time finding the secret to winning on the court. However, all those losing years paid off as the 1980s rolled in as the roster became stacked with intimidating talent. The "Bad Boys" of basketball hammered teams on both ends of the court and won the city's first championship in 1989.
With so much talent on the team, it was far from surprising that the Pistons were able to repeat in 1990. Unfortunately, the team started to fall apart and the dismantling began. The Pistons fell from contention for years, until legendary coach Larry Brown was brought in to right the ship. The team started to play like the Pistons of old and won its third NBA title in 2004.
