Houston Rockets History

The Rockets entered the NBA in 1967 as an expansion team. Originally based in San Diego, the team struggled on the court and in the stands. The lack of fan support made it difficult for the team to afford big name talent, and a move to another city seemed imminent. Just four years after starting its initial campaign, the team was sold and moved to the city of Houston.

Moving to Houston seemed to work wonders for the team as things started to turn around rather quickly. The one advantage it had is that no other basketball team was operating out of Texas, giving them a monopoly on basketball fans. With improved ticket sales, the team was finally able to lure more talented players and it was only a matter of time before the Rockets were able to finish a season with a winning record.

Over the next few years, the Rockets continued to improve and during the 1980s, the team was considered one of the elite teams in the NBA. Year after year, the Rockets would make the playoffs, but could not manage to make a run to the finals. However, the team would not give up and constantly showed progress. Hakeem Olajuwon joining the team proved to be the difference. His maturation into one of the best centers in the game led the Rockets to the NBA title in both 1994 and 1995.
