James Taylor History

James Taylor, while being born in Lenox, Massachusetts, was actually raised in the town of Carrboro, North Carolina, where his family relocated when he was three-years old. In his early years, he learned first to play the cello and then moved up to the guitar. By 1963, he and a friend were playing out at local spots billing themselves as "Jamie and Kooch." After this period and while applying to colleges, he fell into a deep depression and actually had to spend some time in a hospital before getting himself together enough to receive his high school diploma in 1966.

Once this had all transpired, his playing partner suggested that they relocate to New York City and start a band, which is exactly what they did. They band named themselves The Flying Machine and the songs he wrote were focused on the time he had spent dealing with his depression issues. After this time, he took stock in his life and decided on a change of scenery, which he got by moving to London.

He returned to the United States in 1969 after the release of his first album in the UK. Once back, he signed with Warner Bros. records and continued to write and perform songs that came from his heart about his life and feelings. In 1977, he changed labels once again to go with Columbia Records and continue his singing and songwriting career. He later collaborated with both Carly Simon and Carole King. Today, James Taylor tours the country regularly and is quite active in various charitable organizations.
