Jeff Dunham History

Jeff Dunham was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, by his father, a real estate developer and his mother, a homemaker. He took up ventriloquism as a hobby at the very young age of eight-years old and would practice for hours in front of a mirror everyday using a "Mortimer Snerd" doll, which was one of the main characters his idol, Edgar Bergen had created. Beginning in the sixth grade, he began attending a national convention each year of ventriloquists in Kansas City and competing against other ventriloquists in competitions.

He was so good at the competitions that eventually they declared him a "retired champion" and disallowed him from competing as the other members were too intimidated by him. He has only missed one of these conventions in all the years he has been a ventriloquist and that was in 1977. He started early in the public eye by performing at banquets and on local television commercials while still attending high school. Over the years, he developed a handful of characters, which remain on tour with him today.

The characters include Walter (a grumpy old man), Peanut (a hyperactive purple wozzle), Jose Jalape?o on a Stick (just what the name sounds like), Bubba J (a beer swilling redneck), Sweet Daddy Dee (a pimp/manager), Melvin the Superhero Guy (again, just what it sounds like) and Achmed the Dead Terrorist ( the skeleton of a dead suicide bomber). Side characters include Diane and Achmed Junior and the whole crew is on tour with him no matter where his shows are playing. Along with doing multiple television appearances and specials, he has appeared on stage around the country and around the world.
