Memphis Grizzlies History

Initially, the Grizzlies were located in Vancouver, Canada. The team was awarded to this city as part of the NBA's effort to gain national support of its sport. However, the team was not very successful and struggled from the outset. The lack of performance on the court led to dwindling fan support and ownership finally decided that a move might be the best thing for the team.

In 2001, the move would be complete as ownership won out on a bid over Charlotte to move the franchise to Memphis. At this time, Federal Express made a bid for the team to change its name to the Memphis Express, hoping to cash in on a major sports franchise being located in its hometown. The NBA refused the request and the Grizzlies name would remain as the team's nickname.

The change of city was not the only change the Grizzlies experienced during this time. Ownership realized that a massive overhaul had to take place if the team was going to compete with the powerhouse teams in the league. Jerry West was brought in to take over as general manager and he provided quick dividends. In 2004, the new-look Grizzlies made its first playoff appearance.

That success was, however, quickly followed by a few years of frustration. The Grizzlies would not only miss the playoffs in the 2006-07 season, but they would actually finish with the worst record in the league. Jerry West would turn in his resignation and it appeared the team was left to once again rebuild. Gradually, improvements were made and the Grizzlies returned to the playoffs after the 2010-11 season, locking up the final playoff position in the Western Conference.
