New Jersey Devils History

In 1967, the NHL doubled in size, allowing expansion for the first time. Just a few short years later, the NHL would again expand, and the Kansas City Scouts entered the league. The year was 1974 and this was the team that would have a rather interesting road before finally settling in New Jersey. The new kid on the block found it difficult to stay competitive and grew tired of the losing rather quickly. The franchise would pick and move to Colorado.

While the team had a new city and a new name, the Colorado Rockies (the team's new name), it was still playing subpar hockey. Fans in Denver wanted nothing to do with the weak product and support drifted almost as soon as the team started playing there. Ownership decided to move the team again in the hopes of generating more fan support and income for the team. In 1982, the team made its final move to New Jersey.

Now playing out of Newark, New Jersey, the team decided to name itself after an urban legend in the local area. The Jersey Devil was rumored to patrol the local woods and terrorize everyone it came in contact with, and ownership was hoping the team would do the same on the ice. Management took a different approach in that it loaded the team up defensively. The result was one of the most defensively stout teams to ever play the game and the Devils were all of a sudden a winning hockey team.

The trap defense frustrated teams to no end and as long as the Devils could score two or more goals, they knew they had a great chance to win. This was especially true with Martin Brodeur minding the net, as it seemed it took a minor miracle for something to get by him. The Devils would go on to win three Stanley Cups over nine seasons with this dominant squad, the last one being in 2003.
