New Orleans Hornets History

The Hornets were part of the 1989 expansion and was originally founded in Charlotte, North Carolina. Even though the team was young, the roster was filled with some exciting players. Early names that graced the roster during its Charlotte days were Mugsy Bogues and Larry Johnson. The team started to become competitive and expectations started to quickly grow about how far this team could go in the playoffs.

While the team was successful during the regular season, a conference championship and appearance in the finals was not in the cards. The Hornets roster warranted pre-season status as a title favorite, but the team never delivered. As each season seemingly ended in disappointment, fan support started to wane, ownership decided to sell, and the team was moved to New Orleans.

The move also marked a rebuilding phase for the Hornets, as veterans were traded away and team stockpiled draft picks. It took a few years, but the Hornets once again were stocked up on talent and reached the playoffs in 2008. The Hornets posted a division best 56 wins that season, capturing its first ever division title.

With so much success during the 2007-08 season, everyone expected a similar season in 2008-09. However, while the team did post a winning record, it was disappointing compared to the previous season. The Hornets finished seventh overall in the West and exited the playoffs in the first round at the hands of the Denver Nuggets. The backwards trend continued during the 2009-2010, as the Hornets would fail to make the playoffs. The 2010-11 season marked a turnaround though, as the team finished with a 46-36 record, once again securing the seventh seed in the West and a date with the Los Angeles Lakers in the playoffs.
