Philadelphia 76ers History

The 76ers have a long history, dating all the way back to 1939. The team joined the NBA in 1949 as the Syracuse Nationals and won its first championship in 1955. Successive seasons were not as fruitful, however, and the team would move to Philadelphia, where it currently resides, in 1963. At this time, the team would also change its name from the Nationals to the 76ers.

As often happens with a team moves, it gained new life and once again become a force in the league. One of the reasons for this immediate success was the addition of Wilt Chamberlain to the roster. Chamberlain is arguably the most dominant player to ever play the game, and with his supporting cast of Cunningham, Jackson, and Jones, the 76ers would go on to win the division during the 1965-66 season. The 76ers would repeat the following season, but would also capture the NBA title, the first with Philadelphia as its host city.

The Sixers would repeat as division champs during the 1967-68 season, but this would mark the final season as a 76er for Wilt Chamberlain. His departure would also mark the end of the team's domination and the 76ers would not win the division again until its namesake season, 1976-77. It was no coincidence that this would also mark the season where Philadelphia was able to acquire one of the most dynamic players of the era from the New Jersey Nets, Julius "Dr. J" Erving.

The next decade would prove to be one of the most magical times in NBA history. The competitive triangle between the Celtics, 76ers, and Lakers provided an era of sports competition the likes of which may never be seen again. While always in the hunt, the 76ers would manage to win only one title, during the 1982-83 season. The team quickly fell from relevance after this and would not make another finals appearance for nearly two decades.
