Phoenix Coyotes History

The Coyotes were founded in 1972 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The franchise was founded a member of the World Hockey Association, a direct competitor of the NHL at the time. The original name of the franchise was the Jets, and they were one of the more dominant teams in the league, winning its championship three times. When the WHA folded, several teams were selected to join the NHL, the Jets being one of these teams.

While the team was the BMOC in the WHA, the Jets quickly realized the league talent hardly compared to most of the NHL teams. The style of play was much more physical and demanded a different makeup of players. The Jets adapted quickly, though, and after only three years in the league, would make the playoffs with regularity. The NHL continued to expand over the next two decades and the talent pool started to dry up. The Jets once again found themselves at the bottom of the standings by the time the middle of the 1990s arrived.

Like many struggling teams before it, the Jets would pick up and move in the hopes that a new fan base would rejuvenate the team. Ownership found a willing participant in Arizona and relocated the team. The Winnipeg Jets would now be called the Phoenix Coyotes. The move worked and the Coyotes started to rise in the standings. The team still longs for its first championship, though, as it has yet to hoist the Stanley Cup.
