The NHL started to recognize that if it was going to continue to dominate the hockey market, more teams were needed. In 1967, the size of the league doubled from six teams to twelve. Among the new additions was the St. Louis Blues. The team was added to the Western Conference and faced many challenges right from the outset.

As the years passed, the Blues would begin to struggle financially as well as in the win column. As happens with most sports teams, when the team is not winning, fans stop coming through the gates to see them play. By the 1980s, the Blues were taking desperate measures to stay afloat. An example of the desperation at the time was the fact that team was carrying half the amount of players that most franchises were simply because it could not afford the added payroll. The upside to all of this was that management had learned to pick players that were skilled, durable, and could handle the excess playing time.

Even with such limited funds, the Blues were able to land some quality players that would star to make this team relevant. Hockey greats like Brett Hull, Brendan Shanahan, and Grant Fuhr all wore Blues jerseys at one point in their careers.
