Super Bowl History

The game we know today that most football fans wait all year to see hardly started out from grand beginnings. There was a time when teams were lucky to get people to give up a quarter to watch their players on the gridiron. In fact, college teams were considered the only legitimate football teams and professional football was looked down upon. However, over the years, all of that would change and the Super Bowl played a significant part in the evolution of the professional game.

On January 15, 1967, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Green Bay Packers played the very first Super Bowl. At the time, the AFL and NFL were still competing against each other. The game was created to pit the best team from each league up against each other to see who the true champion of football was at the conclusion of the season. The Packers proved to be far too talented in both Super Bowl I and Super Bowl II for its AFL counterpart to contain.

Joe Namath would put an end to the old guard dominance on January 12, 1969. Broadway Joe predicted the young Jets would beat the Colts and they did exactly that. The final score of the game was 16-7, and football as fans knew it at the time was about to change forever. New rivalries would be born and the Super Bowl was quickly becoming the hottest ticket in sports.

When we think back to the beginning of the modern era for the Super Bowl, one cannot help but associate two teams that dominated the game in the 1970s with some of the greatest Super Bowls we have ever seen. While Pittsburgh bested the Cowboys both times they met during this decade, these games laid the foundation for a bitter rivalry that would once again come to light two decades later.

The 49ers picked up where the Cowboys and Steelers left off in the 1980s. This was a time of domination that modern football had never seen, nor has it seen since. In all, the 49ers would win four Super Bowls from 1982 to 1990. In addition, the team would capture its fifth Super Bowl win five years later in 1995. As of 2011, the 49ers were tied with the Cowboys with five Super Bowl wins and trail only the Pittsburgh Steelers (6) for most wins in this game.

The Cowboys would once again rise to glory in the 1990s and the infamous "triplets" destroyed every opponent in their wake. Led by Troy Aikman, the team stumbled but once in a four year span and went a perfect 3-0 in its Super Bowl appearances during the 1990s. As the 49ers had done the previous decade, this Cowboys team established itself as one of the all-time great dynasties of the NFL.

The new millennium brought two teams back into the limelight, as this decade was dominated by the Steelers and Patriots. Football fans were treated to incredible games as two quarterbacks truly came into their own. Since 2000, the Steelers and Patriots would make a combined seven Super Bowl appearances. This was also a time when Aaron Rodgers was finally able to put the legend of Brett Favre behind him, as his Green Bay Packers would hand the Steelers only its second loss in eight Super Bowl appearances.
