Washington Wizards History

The Wizards have been in the Washington area since 1963, but they have not always called this city home. The team came to be in 1961 as the Chicago Packers and represented that city for two seasons. It was decided early on that the team needed to be relocated and the move to Baltimore occurred in 1963, when the team also changed its nickname to the Bullets.

The Bullets were a true power throughout the 1970s, winning the conference title for the first time in 1971. However, the team was swept out of the finals by the Milwaukee Bucks. The winning ways would continue, but it was decided in 1973 to relocate the team to Landover, Maryland, and was then known as the Capital Bullets. It was not until the following season, in 1974, that the team would choose to use Washington instead of Capital. It would, however, retain the nickname of the Bullets.

The winning ways continued as the Bullets would win the conference four times in the 1970s. After winning the conference title for the third time that decade in 1978, the Bullets would go on to win its first NBA Championship. It took seven games to do it, but the Bullets dispatched the Seattle Supersonics and finally had a championship team. In fact, it was the first sports championship of any kind the city had won in over three decades.

While making the playoffs many times over the next two decades, the team would fail to duplicate its 1978 feat. The Bullets would also undergo another name change in 1997 due to the negative connotation of "Bullets." The city of Washington, D.C. was experiencing a period of extreme violence, so the decision was made to change the name to the Washington Wizards. This was also the year the Wizards would move to the MCI Center, now named the Verizon Center, which it still calls home.
