Sacramento Kings History
The Kings originated in 1945 as a member of the National Basketball League (NBL). Just a few short years later, in 1948, the NBL and its rival Basketball Association of America (BAA) would merge to form the NBA. At the time, the Kings were based out of Rochester, New York, and were called the Royals. It was during its time in Rochester that the first, and as of the 2010-11 season, only NBA title would be won. The team would remain there until 1957, when it moved to Cincinnati.
The fact that Cincinnati was a much larger market had ownership thinking it could draw more fans, make more money, and get better players. However, a string of injuries ruined any momentum the team hoped to create with the move. During its time in Cincinnati, the team would fail to win its division a single time. In 1972, the team moved to Kansas City/Omaha and changed its name to the Kings.
Home games were split between Omaha and Kansas City over the next three seasons, until the team was finally able to call Kansas City home in 1975. The Kings would remain there through the 1985 season, where it produced only one division title for the city's fans in 1979. Once again, the team was moved, this time to its current home of Sacramento.
While it took some time for the team to get things rolling, Sacramento proved to hold the best times of the franchise since its days in Rochester, New York. League superstars Chris Webber and Mitch Redmond led the way and the team would win back-to-back division titles in 2002 and 2003. Once again, though, a run at the championship was not to be, as the Kings exited the playoffs far too early each season.
