Tampa Bay Buccaneers History

In 1976, Tampa Bay was awarded and expansion franchise. They took four seasons to become a decent football team as quarterback Doug Williams and head coach John McKay led them to the NFC championship in 1979. They would make the playoffs quite a few times in those early years, winning their division the next three out of four seasons, before slipping to bottom of their division.

The 1980's and 1990's were some of the darkest times for this organization because it seemed that they could never get it right. Despite high draft choices and a plethora of head coaches, the organization would always find a way to lose. All of this changed once Tony Dungy was hired as the head coach. Dungy would be responsible for laying the ground work that would become an eventual championship team.

Over the next few seasons, the Buccaneers progressed into one of the better teams in the NFC Central. Dungy won this division in 1999 sending the Buccaneers to the playoffs for the first time since their 1997 wild card berth. The team was then turned over to Jon Gruden in 2002 who led this team to the Super Bowl that same year. They defeated the Eagles in the championship game and later destroyed the Raiders to give this franchise their long awaited Super Bowl championship.
