San Antonio Spurs History

The Spurs originated as an ABA team called the Dallas Chaparrals in 1967. Eventually, the team was moved to San Antonio and took on the nickname of the Spurs. When the ABA merged with the NBA in 1976, the Spurs were one of the teams absorbed by the league. Faced with many obstacles as a new team in the NBA, the Spurs would still find a way to win.

The Spurs were the most dominant team in the ABA, a characteristic that would bode well once in the NBA. Amazingly, the new NBA franchise would make the playoffs in its very first season. However, the jubilation was quickly ended when the Celtics dispatched them in the first round of the playoffs. However, teams were now on alert that the Spurs were a true power in the league.

San Antonio would see its first hardships during the 1980s. The team was up just as much as it was down during this decade. It welcomed the 1990s and its new superstar player, David Robinson. This period marked one of the greatest in franchise history as the Spurs would go on to win five division titles in the 1990s and a championship in 1999. Robinson would retire after the Spurs won their second championship in 2003, but this was hardly the end of this glorious run for the Spurs.

The team was still packed with talent, including "The Big Three," in Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili. This combination would continue to dominate the division, winning the regular season title in 2005, 2006, 2009, and 2011. The Spurs would cap off both the 2004-05 and 2006-07 regular seasons with championship titles, bringing the total to four for the franchise.
