Kansas City Chiefs History

The Chiefs organization was one of the founding teams of the AFL when it started professional play in 1960. However, this team was originally based in Dallas, Texas and called the Texans. However, owner Lamar Hunt and head coach, Hank Stram opted to move to greener pastures in Kansas City in 1963. This was because fan support seemed to be more fervent in Kansas City though they had won their first AFL championship in 1962 in Dallas.

After the move, the Chiefs were instrumental in spreading open their offensive attack by being one of the best passing teams in football history. The Chiefs, under Stram, won two more championships that included an AFL title in 1963 and a Super Bowl Championship in 1969. However, after the Stram era ended, the Chiefs would fall on hard times until the late 1980's.

In 1988, Marty Schottenheimer was hired by the Chiefs organization to turn around their losing trend over the past twenty five seasons. Schottenheimer did just that as he restored this organization to prominence with teams centering on All Pro linebacker Derrick Thomas. However, though they made it to the playoffs on several occasions in the 1990's, they could never get over the hump and the Schottenheimer era ended without a championship.
