However, game would be the first upset in Super Bowl history as the Jets went on to win and become the first AFL team to win the Super Bowl. However, after the merger in 1970 and with the ailing knees of Broadway Joe, the Jets would enter a long dark period.

The Jets were a dormant team until the turn of the millennium due to poor draft choices coupled with bad coaches. This organization started to turn around when they hired Bill Parcells in the late 1990's but after he left, the three coaches in his stead failed to capitalize on the solid team he had built. It wasn't until 2009 that the Jets would emerge as a dominant team in the AFC. They sported the best defense in the NFL under new head coach, Rex Ryan, which coupled to lead them to the AFC Championship. They played valiantly in this game but fell to the awesome offensive prowess of Peyton Manning and the Colts.
