Dallas Stars History

The Stars entered the league in 1967 as part of a major expansion by the NHL. Originally based out of Minnesota, the North Stars (the team's original name) struggled during the first few years of existence. This was common for expansion teams, as the pool of talent from which they could draw was limited. Unfortunately, fan support quickly waned and the North Stars were faced with the option of folding or merging with another team. Management selected to combine with the Cleveland Barons, which dramatically improved the overall quality of the team.

As the 1980s arrived, so did better fortunes for the team. The North Stars were now winning regularly and becoming a force in the NHL. Ownership wanted to move the team to a different city at this time, and San Jose and Anaheim were at the top of the wish list. However, Dallas was also looking to add hockey to its list of professional sports teams. None other than Dallas Cowboy great Roger Staubach approached the team, convincing them that this great sports town would support an NHL franchise. The team changed its nickname to the Stars, and Minnesota fans waited for the bomb to drop.

In 1993, the team finally made the move to Dallas. The Stars added some big name players to strengthen an already competitive roster and the Stars became a true force in the league. As the nineties wore on, the Stars became better and better, finally winning the Stanley Cup in 1999. Fans went wild when the Stars made it back to the finals in the 1999-2000 season, but a repeat was not in the cards. The Stars were defeated in six games by the New Jersey Devils.
