The Knicks originally entered professional basketball as a charter member of the BAA. This was the predecessor of the NBA. That league did not last for long, as it was eventually joined together with another league to form the NBA. In 1947, the team signed Wataru Misaka of Japan, the first non-Caucasian player in the league.

While the 1940s and 1950s did not hold much glory for the Knicks, the turnaround of the franchise would begin in 1968, when Red Holzman signed on as head coach. He turned the franchise completely around to create a truly dominant squad. The Knicks would win the conference title in 1970, 1972, and 1973. It would also go on to win two championships during this time in 1970 and 1973
As happens with many dynasties, the team would begin aging and the play would start to suffer. The Knicks would not win another division title until 1989. It would take more than two decades before the team would once again battle for a shot at the NBA title. In 1985, the Knicks drafted Patrick Ewing, who would put the Knicks back among the elite of the NBA. The Knicks would make it back the championship game in both 1994 and 1999, but would fail to convert either opportunity.
