Miami Heat History

Relatively speaking, the Heat is one of the youngest teams in the NBA. Only forming in 1989, the team has made quite an impression on the basketball world in a little over two decades. The early years were very typical of a new franchise in that the Heat struggled to put together a roster talented enough to vie for a championship. It would take about ten years before the season outlook was a positive one in Miami.

While struggling to reach the playoffs in its early years, the arrival of Pat Riley would soon make worrying about a playoff spot a thing of the past. Serving as both coach and general manager, Riley would put together a roster feared by other teams in the league. One of the first moves he made was in securing the rights of Alonzo Mourning. The Heat would make the playoffs every season from 1997 through 2000.

After suffering a mild setback in 2002, Riley drafted Dwayne Wade as his point guard. Shaquille O'Neal was acquired through free agency and all of the pieces were now in place. In 2006, the Heat would cut through the playoffs and win the team's first championship.

The Heat has remained aggressive over the years, constantly seeking out the top talent in the league. The latest addition to this star-studded roster was LeBron James. Added prior to the beginning of the 2010-11 season, championship expectations were once again buzzing around town. The Heat had some rough patches, but managed to secure the number two seed in the Eastern Conference late in the season by beating its main nemesis of the season, the Boston Celtics.
