Portland Trail Blazers History

The Trail Blazers were formed in 1970. At the time, the team held the distinction of being the only major sports team in the state, a distinction it still holds today. More than likely, this is the very reason sell outs are the norm when basketball season rolls around each year. Even with the team struggling during its early expansion years, fan support was never an issue.

Fans were rewarded for their loyalty during the 1976-77 season. The team ripped through the playoffs and appeared to come up against a team of destiny in the Philadelphia 76ers. After all, the team was named after the birth year of the country. It only seemed fitting that the 76ers would win it all during the 1976-77 season. However, the Trail Blazers would have none of this and beat the 76ers in six games to win the franchise's first title.
Even though the Trail Blazers would win the division in 1978, it was the beginning of the end of an era. Its star player, Bill Walton, demanded a trade, and so went any chance of a deep playoff run. While the team never fell out of relevancy, it was clear there was not enough talent to win a championship. New hope would emerge when Clyde "The Glide" Drexler joined the team. He led his teammates to two conference titles, however, the team could not manage to once again win the NBA championship. The Trail Blazers would fall to the Pistons in 1990 and the Bulls in 1992.
