Ottawa Senators History

This team is not the first hockey team to be based out of Ottawa and be called the Senators. The original Senators played here in the late 1800s and early 1900s. At one time, the Senators were actually one of the more dominant teams in hockey. Anyone lucky enough to see the Stanley Cup in person will see the rosters of eleven previous teams on the Stanley Cup. However, even with the on ice success, the team struggled financially and was eventually disbanded in 1934.

In 1990, the NHL expanded again and awarded a franchise to Ottawa. Ownership decided to pay respect to the former club and resurrect the name for its new franchise. The team was given several years to prepare for its first game and in 1993, the six-decade hiatus of hockey was finally over for Ottawa.

Like most of the modern expansion teams, the Senators found it very difficult to win during the early years of existence. However, finishing at the bottom of the standings each season offered the benefit of being awarded the top draft picks. The Senators used this advantage and started to stockpile the best of the best. In 1996, the expansion Senators would make the NHL playoffs for the first time.

While the team was known for its feisty play, the playoffs presented a new challenge. The more experienced teams continuously knocked the Senators out of the playoffs year after year. Finally, during the 2006-07 season, the Senators learned how to win and made a deep run into the playoffs. They would win the Eastern Conference Championship for the first time in team history, but fell short in the finals and lost to another expansion team, the Anaheim Ducks, in five games.
