Chicago Blackhawks History

Blackhawks fans can say something that only five other franchises in the NHL can claim, "we were one of the original six." The team was founded in 1926 as part of the initial launch of the NHL. Unlike many of the other franchises, team management was adamant about using American players for its American-based team. This dedication gives the Blackhawks the distinction of being the first team to have a roster comprised of only American players.

With only six teams in the league, it was hard for any team to ever be out of the race. Unfortunately, the early years of the franchise were not quite as rewarding as they were for some of the other original franchises of the NHL. While in the hunt each season, the Blackhawks only captured two championships before 1960.

The 1960-61 season would mark only the third time in almost forty years the Blackhawks would become champions. Little did fans know that this would be their last taste of a championship in the NHL for almost fifty years. Breaking one of the true dry spells in all of sports, the Blackhawks once again made it to the finals during the 2009-10 season. The team would face off against the red-hot Philadelphia Flyers, who had made a miraculous run out of the six seed. Philadelphia's magic would end during these finals, though, and the Blackhawks would finally have the team's fourth Stanley Cup victory.
