Other Orlando Teams
The only major sports franchise to call Orlando home these days is the Magic but if fans are willing to travel a bit, they have quite a bit from which to choose. NFL fans can travel down to Miami and root on the Dolphins. Baseball fans have a short drive to Tampa Bay, where the Rays hit the diamond every summer. Even hockey fans have a team to root for in sunny Florida, as the Panthers take to the ice when old man winter arrives.

Orlando Magic History
It was only a matter of time before Mickey and company warranted having their own sports franchise. In 1989, Orlando residents saw their wishes come true as the NBA awarded the city its very own NBA team. Unlike many expansion teams, including the teams the Magic joined the league with in 1989, it was successful right out of the gate and continues to be so today.
The front office of the Magic did a spectacular job in the early years, putting together a talent rich squad. While most expansion teams benefit from early draft positioning, the Magic cashed in its position by somehow landing the best talent every draft. Two of the first players to don the colors of the Magic were Penny Hardaway and Shaquille O'Neal. In just its sixth season, these two superstars would lead the Magic to its first championship appearance.
In its first finals appearance, the youth of the team would show, as the Rockets crushed them in four straight games to win the championship. The following season, the Magic would come right back, showing little hangover from the loss in the championship the year prior. The team ripped through the regular season, winning 60 games. The road to a repeat championship appearance was, however, cut short by Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.
After the 1995-96 season, Shaq left Orlando to play besides Kobe Bryant, forming one of the most dominant duo's in basketball history. From this point forward, the team would struggle and produce seasons right around the .500 level. The true crash came in 2003-04, when the Magic finished with a pitiful 21-61 regular season record.
The only good that came from that horrible season was an exceptional spot in the next year's draft. The front office had seen enough and totally disbanded the team. Move after move hit the wire and the team that was ready to take to the courts in 2004 looked nothing like the one that did the season prior. The piece de resistance was in adding Dwight Howard with the first overall pick in the draft.
The Magic would return to the NBA finals in 2009, but once again fall short in its quest for an NBA championship, losing to the Lakers in five games. However, the game three victory was the first time this franchise won a game in the NBA finals, giving it something to hold onto for hope in future seasons. The Magic would return to the conference finals in the 2009-10, but would lose to the Boston Celtics in six games.
