The Kings came into the league in 1967, along with five other teams to increase the NHL's market. Rumors were surfacing about a new league starting, and the NHL wanted to do everything in its power to squash the competition. Unfortunately, at the time, there was not quite enough talent to feed this expansion and the upstart World Hockey Association. That being the case, the beginning years were more than challenging for this young franchise.

At the time, though, the Kings were the only game in town for California hockey fans and the team enjoyed support well beyond its talent levels. The Kings fans were forced to watch far more defeats than victories for the first decade of the franchise's existence. Fortunes would soon change, though, as the team was finally able to use the draft to stock up on young talent. Additionally, the Oilers were about to make the biggest blunder in modern hockey.

After winning five of six championships, the Oiler decide to trade Wayne Gretzky to the Kings. The Kings became an immediate power in the Western Conference and would make it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1993. The team would fall short that year, and every year thereafter. While the Kings have still made the playoffs, the team has yet to recapture the glory of the Gretzky era.
