Growing up in the 1940's in England, Roger Waters was lucky enough to make friends with the men who would help him form one of the most popular rock bands of all time. He teamed up with Syd Barrett, Richard Wright and Nick Mason in 1965 and began playing in a band called The Tea Set before changing their name to Pink Floyd. They got off to a bit of a slow start but once they released the album Dark Side of the Moon, there was no turning back on the road to superstardom.

Unfortunately, Syd Barrett suffered from mental health problems that made it impossible for him to stay in the band, so he was replaced by Doug Gilmour. Roger Waters took over creative control of the band and the creations he came up with were completely original. Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall were monster hits but the band had personal issues and decided to call it quits in 1984. Roger Waters took the opportunity to start pursuing opportunities for a solo career.

Waters wrote and produced a slew of solo albums and the fans did enjoy them, but they did not quite compare with Pink Floyd. Waters thought that there may no longer be an audience for rock music and he decided to compose an opera in 2005.
