George Lopez was born in Mission Hills, California, in 1961 and abandoned by both of his parents at birth. He was actually raised by his grandmother and step-grandfather. To this day, he has no contact with this real parents. Even with this rocky start, he began his career in the entertainment industry by landing a position at a radio station in Los Angeles. He became the first Latino to ever host a primetime morning spot on an English speaking station in the largest radio market in the United States.

His big break came when a scout for Sandra Bullock was out locating Latino talent for television. She had looked over the current line up on television and had decided there was a serious lack of sitcoms and shows that had Latino stars in them. This was the birth of George Lopez, one of the only sitcoms on television that starred a Latino actor but was not exclusively directed at the Hispanic community. After its initial run on ABC, the show went into syndication on Nick at Nite . Unfortunately, ABC decided to cancel the show for its prime time slot at the same time of the syndication. Not long after this in 2009, it was announced that he would be getting his own late night talk show on TBS.

Lopez Tonight was a success for him and still airs to this day with the occasional time slot change. Over the years, he has tried his hand at different venues that included co-hosting Inside the NFL from 2003 to 2004 along with many guest spots in both films and television shows. He has taken the time to put his life into an autobiography called Why You Cryin', which made the New York Times Top 20 list after its release.
