New York Rangers History
In 1926, the Rangers were formed as one of the "original six" teams of the NHL. In addition to the Rangers, the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, and Toronto Maple Leafs would comprise the new league. It would not take the Rangers long to leave their mark in the NHL.
In 1928, the Rangers would get to hoist the Stanley Cup for the very first time. Fans had to think this was a sign of the future and were looking forward to years of dominating the hockey world. While the Rangers would manage to win one title every decade through the 1940s, the last win in 1940 would become the start of a championship drought lasting more than five decades.
Beginning in 1967, the NHL was forced to expand for the first team because of the World Hockey Association. While the original NHL teams had what seemed like a limitless pool of players on which to draw, the added teams would dilute the talent pool significantly. In all, twelve teams were added to the league by the 1974-75 season and the Rangers would continue to struggle.
Finally, as the 1990s arrived, the team put together a roster that would once again compete and dominate the league. With Adam Graves and Mark Messier leading the way, the Rangers would tear through the 1993-94 regular season. When the playoffs arrived, the Rangers would not be denied. After 54 years, Lord Stanley was finally back in New York City.
