Having won 17 championships through the 2009-10 season, there is but one team in the league that can match its success. The teams origins can be traced all the way back to 1947 when the Detroit Gems were purchased as a disbanded team from the NBL. The new team would take on the name of the Lakers and represent the city of Minneapolis. The team was an immediate force and would win five championships from 1949 to 1954.

A decision was made to move the team from Minneapolis to Los Angeles for the start of the 1960-61 season. The move would spark a resurgence of the team, as it would win six conference titles in the 1960s. However, the Lakers were left wanting when it came to winning another championship.

That dry spell would end in 1972 and the team has remained a force ever since. Players such as James Worthy, Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar turned the Lakers into a perennial force. The team would win a total of five championships during the 1980s. The Lakers were deprived of hoisting the championship trophy in the 1990s, but they once again came to prominence in the 2000s, winning a total of seven championships, including a three-peat in 2008, 2009, and 2010.
