Philadelphia Flyers History

The Flyers were one of six teams to enter the National Hockey League during its first expansion in 1967. While the team has only actually won the Stanley Cup twice since that time, it would be hard to make a case against the fact that this team is by far the most successful of any team joining the league from that date forward. The Flyers literally changed the way hockey was played in the 1970s and is one of the few teams still able to integrate the "tough guy" style with speed and remain competitive in today's game.

Realizing the only way to become successful as an expansion franchise was to play physical and intimidating, Flyers management started to acquire the biggest and toughest players available. By the early 1970s, teams were literally terrified to come to Philadelphia and face this team at the Spectrum. To add insult to injury, the team acquired Bernie Parent, a goaltender that would later draw the observation that, "only God saves more than Bernie Parent."

The toughness of the Flyers was no secret around the league. Fans embraced the thug image and dubbed their team the "Broad Street Bullies." The anchor line of this legendary team became known as the LCB line, standing for Leach, Clarke, and Barber. While all three of these players were big and tough enough to defend themselves, there was no need because Dave "The Hammer" Schultz and Bob Kelly would drop the gloves at a moment's notice. This intimidating style would see the Flyers to four conference championships and two Stanley Cup victories from 1974 to 1980.

This style of play has become a trademark of the team, one that remains in place today. While the Flyers have yet to win another Stanley Cup, the team is a regular fixture in the post season and made the finals as recently as the 2009-10 season. The one and only ingredient that the team seems to lack from the olden days is a goaltender that is a true wall. The one that fans still think about as the next coming of Parent is Pelle Lindbergh. Had he not died from injuries sustained in a tragic car accident in 1985, it is widely conceded that the Flyers would have won multiple Stanley Cups with him minding the net.
