Denver Nuggets History

Basketball fans today are very familiar with the Houston Rockets; however, few of them know that the Denver Nuggets actually started out with this as its team name. The league mandated a name change in 1974 because the name was already in play in Houston. The new name was looked upon as a blessing, as the team seemed to turn around its fortunes overnight and quickly moved to the top of the standings. This success led to the Nuggets being folded into the NBA in 1976 along with three other ABA teams.

Larry Brown served as head coach during these fruitful years, and continued his ABA success once the merger with the NBA was completed. However, he would leave the franchise in 1979 and the team would soon experience difficulties. After a few tumultuous seasons, the Nuggets got back on track and started to win again. It was during that span of time that Denver set the record for most consecutive games scoring more than 100 points, with 136.

The team continued to remain competitive throughout the 1990s, but for some reason was unable to hold onto a quality coach for any duration of time. In addition to a steady stream of coaches, ownership changed hands on multiple occasions. During the 2000s, Denver has made progress and while still not having won a NBA championship, the team is a perennial playoff contender and hopes to break through to elite status again.
