Pittsburgh Penguins History
Pennsylvania was awarded two teams during the NHL's first expansion in 1967. Philadelphia was awarded the Flyers, and Pittsburgh was awarded the Penguins. As most of the teams from this expansion did, the Penguins struggled for wins early on, but started to build a quality team up with young talent. In 1969, the team drafted Michel Briere and hope swept throughout the city. His influence on the team was immediate and the Penguins finally started to win games on a regular basis.
The winning was short lived, though, as Briere died in a tragic car accident. The team would quickly fall back in the standings while it waited to find its next great player. That player would arrive in 1984, when the Penguins drafted Mario Lemieux. Over the next few years, the Penguins surrounded its superstar with talent and toughness. In 1991, the Penguins would break through and win the Stanley Cup in its very first finals appearance. The team repeated the feat again during the 1991-92 season, winning back-to-back Stanley Cups.
The team would see its winning ways drift over the next decade or so, but history would come very close to repeating itself during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons. The team had drafted Sidney Crosby earlier in the decade, along with Marc-Andre Fleury. Much like the Lemieux days, the team would surround these players with a solid supporting cast.
During the 2007-08 season, the Penguins would make it back to the Stanley Cup Finals, only to be thwarted by the Detroit Red Wings. However, the squad would get its revenge the next season as both teams would once again square off for the championship. The Penguins would prevail in seven games and were once again the best team in the NHL.
