San Jose History

The Sharks have a very interesting beginning in that even though the team is an expansion team, it did not have to be built from the ground up. Just as the Sharks were becoming a reality, the Minnesota North Stars were about to leave and relocate to Dallas. The league decided that some of the players on this roster would be awarded to the Sharks. In return, Dallas would be able to enter the expansion draft and rebuild its team.

At the time the Sharks took the ice for the first time, it held an unusual mix of veterans and younger talent. This mix was a bit of a disaster, though, as the Sharks lost a total of 71 games in its second season. By the teams third season, its new arena was ready to go and the Sharks hoped to change to a winning attitude in its new building. This year would mark the first of many playoff appearances by the Sharks. In fact, the team would provide one of the biggest upsets in NHL history as it would defeat the Detroit Red Wings in the opening series as an eight seed.

The Sharks would continue to improve over the next few years and by early 2000, the team would become a true force in the NHL. While never reaching the Stanley Cup Finals, the Sharks have won their division an amazing five times over a nine-year span. The 2010-11 season brought more of the same as the Sharks would finish the season with a 48-25-9 record, earning the second seed in the Western Conference.
