San Jose Earthquakes History

The San Jose Earthquakes is a California based, Major League Soccer club that is part of the Western Conference and plays in both the United States and Canada. They were originally known as "The Clash" and they played under that name for a few years from 1995 through 1999. As The Clash, the team played its first game against D.C. United, the team based in the Washington, D.C. and won. This was not only a milestone for them as a team but also for MLS as it was the first game played in the U.S.

Sensing the need for a change, the team underwent a retooling in 1999 that included the name change to the San Jose Earthquakes, an apt name due to their home being in California. This, along with the addition of a new head coach, allowed the team to advance well in the rankings of the MLS that year. They were able to turn the entire team around in what is known as the biggest change in MLS history. However, at the end of the season, the coach and more than one player left the team causing some major setbacks.

This caused great distress among the loyal fans they had made in the Bay area. The team looked for another location to base from, as they could not convince the local powers that be that a soccer specific stadium was a necessity in order for them to grow. Subsequently, they relocated to Houston and became known as the Houston Dynamo. They took none of the Earthquakes logos or colors with them as a new team so in 2006, when San Jose agreed to give them their stadium, the team moved back home and got a fresh start.

As with many other professional sports franchises, drama has followed the team over the years but they have risen above the issues. The fresh start they got in 2006 and 2007 saw resurgence in the fan base and it reflected in the team's play on the field. While not winning the championships in the past few years, they have come extremely close and continue to play like the consummate professional they are.
