Buffalo Sabres History

Initially failing to land a franchise during the 1967 expansion of the NHL, the Knox family remained persistent and was finally able to win a franchise in 1970. Ownership did everything that it could to secure the best talent in the league, upsetting some of the powers of the NHL in the process.

Up until the Sabres first season, Quebec was the sole territory of the Montreal Canadiens. This was one of the main reasons why the Canadiens were such a dominant team from the very start of its existence. All of this changed in 1970, and the Buffalo Sabres took full advantage of this incredible pool of talent. One of the more notable signings was in securing the rights to Gilbert Perreault. He would lead this team to dominance and multiple conference championships.

Even though the Sabres were a true force, the team was unable to win the Stanley Cup. Eventually, its great players moved on and the Sabres would begin to struggle for the latter part of the 1980s and early 1990s. That would change, however, when Dominic Hasek stood between the pipes. Hasek was a true stone wall and he guided the team to yet another conference championship in 1999. The first NHL Championship was denied yet again, though, as the Dallas Stars would win the Stanley Cup by defeating the Sabres in a very controversial sixth game.
