New York Islanders History

The year 1972 marked another expansion year in the NHL. The league was scrambling to cut off an upstart professional hockey league, the World Hockey Association, from stealing NHL fans. For this reason, the NHL decided to put a second team in New York to saturate the area with NHL teams, making it impossible for the WHA to field a team that would garner fan interest. The Islanders were born and thrown right into the fire.

The teams that entered the league during these haphazard years struggled to find players early on. It was common among many of new teams to take a few years before hitting their stride. Unlike the teams that entered the NHL in the 1990s and 2000s, these teams had the benefit of the NHL still being relatively small. By the 1974-75 season, the Islanders had finally filled its roster with players that would allow the team to contend. Denis Potvin was among these players and his skill and leadership would take the team to the playoffs for the first time in its very young history.

The tail end of the 1970s was dominated by the Islanders, as the team would win the Eastern Conference Championship in both the 1977-78 and 1978-79 seasons. However, they could not manage to win the cup. That would all change when the new decade rolled in. The 1979-80 season would see the Islanders take the Eastern Conference title again, but this time the team would also hoist the most cherished possession in all of hockey, the Stanley Cup.

The winning of the Cup in 1980 marked a run that few other NHL teams in the modern era have duplicated. Including that first Stanley Cup victory, the Islanders would win the Cup four straight years. This put them ahead of every other expansion team that joined the league after 1967. While some of the other teams had won championships, the only teams to hold more titles than the Islanders at the time were those that were part of the "original six."
