Calgary Flames History

Originating in 1972 and playing out of Atlanta, Georgia, the team had a very auspicious beginning. While the NHL was literally trying to balance the power of the league and offer hockey in an area that was seeing a surge due to the World Hockey Association, the Flames were not received well and saw little support from the Atlanta community. In 1980, the team picked up and moved to Calgary.

The response to the Flames was positive right from the start. Calgary was hungry for its own team in the NHL and fan support was incredible. The team responded by playing winning hockey and in 1986, the Flames would win the Western Conference and head to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in franchise history.

While the Flames would not capitalize on this opportunity, the team made the most of its next appearance in the finals. In 1989, the team duplicated its feat of winning the Western Conference, but the end of the season would end quite differently. The taste of that first finals defeat still fresh, the Flames looked forward to its revenge match against the Montreal Canadiens. After six tough games, the Flames would prevail, winning the Cup for the first time in franchise history.
