The Red Wings were founded in 1926, but originally played as the Detroit Cougars. The team's arena had not yet been completed, so it played its home games in Ontario for its first season. Unfortunately, this would mark a decline in the team. While the Red Wings always seemed to be in the playoffs, the Stanley Cup was kept out of reach for over four decades. The 1990s arrived and the Red Wings once again kicked it into high gear. The Red Wings would win the Western Conference three times in that decade, winning the Cup in two of those opportunities. The 2000s brought on much of the same success, as the Red Wings would win the conference in 2002, 2008 and 2009, and would capture the Cup in both 2002 and 2008.
