Washington Capitals History

The Capitals first season in the league was the 1974-75 season, and it was anything but easy. By the time the Capitals came into the league, ten other teams had recently entered and an additional team was allowed into the league the very same season. This meant the talent pool that once had only six teams drawing from it now had 18 teams looking for players. Being the last of these teams, the Capitals were well behind everyone else.

It would take a full decade before team has enough talent to be considered a threat to win games. In 1983, the team finally turned the corner and would make the playoffs for the first time. This was actually the beginning of an impressive run of fourteen straight years seeing post-season action. However, the team was still missing the star power to take it to the next level. The final year of this impressive run was the best one for the Capitals. During the 1997-98 season, the Capitals would win the Eastern Conference Championship and head to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time. The loss to the Red Wings, however, seemed to take its toll and the Capitals spiraled backwards into oblivion once again.

After several more years of frustration, the team would draft Alexander Ovechkin. He was the latest of the new breed of "great ones" and immediately made an impact. The Capitals started to dominate regular season play and were now considered a legitimate favorite to win the Stanley Cup. The 2009-10 season ended with an early playoff exit, but the team came back with a vengeance in 2010-11 and earned the top seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs, second only in points to the Vancouver Canucks.
