Chivas USA History

Chivas USA, one of two Los Angeles based soccer teams, is a Major League Soccer (MLS) club and is the eleventh such club to join the West conference. In 2004, a spot opened to allow them to do this by the closing of two other MLS clubs. The name Chivas in Spanish actually means "goats" and is the nickname of their sister team in Mexico, CD Guadalajara. The team wasted no time in moving through the ranks to take first in the Western division in only their third year and qualify into the playoffs.

The owner of the club, Jorge Vergara, is a businessperson from Mexico and a well-known film producer. Chivas USA is only one of the group of soccer teams he currently owns but it is the only one based in the United States. His goal after acquiring the team was to bring them to the U.S. and get them into the MLS as a mainstay that he succeeded in doing in 2004.
