Minnesota Wild History

Fans were heartbroken when NHL action left town in 1993, but little did they know it would be less than a decade before hockey would once again grace the local arena. In 2000, the NHL decided to expand and awarded a new franchise to the city. Hockey was back in Minnesota, and fans could not have been happier!

Being an expansion team is not an easy task in this day and age, as talent is often very hard to come by in the first few years. The Wild, however, managed to put together a roster of young players that would allow them to build for the future. While the team was not winning many games, the players were coming together as a team and would begin to win long before anyone expected them to be able to do so. In 2003, the Wild would make the playoffs for the first time. Amazingly, it was not until the conference finals that the team would be ousted.

Unfortunately, any momentum the team had built was ruined by the lockout of 2004. This hurt many teams as quite a few rule changes were made when hockey resumed. More penalties were being called to loosen up play, and this hurt teams like the Wild that were using more physical play in order to compete. It would take the Wild until the 2007 season to once again make the playoffs.
