Denver Broncos History

The Broncos first hit the gridiron in 1960. The team would have more than its fair share of struggles right out of the gate, and almost saw the team fall to wayside in 1965. However, a new ownership group stepped in with a new attitude and the Broncos would slowly climb up from the depths of the league. The team would sign John Elway in 1983, marking the beginning of a new era in Broncos football.

Elway quickly established himself as a star and the team as a true contender in the league. In his early years, he was considered one of the best arms in the league and a great scrambler as well. However, it was when he learned to become a true pocket passer and use his scrambling only for last second escapes that would lead to Denver's first Super Bowl title.

John Elway's departure after his second title would leave the Bronco's in the hands of Griese. His reign ended when he was replaced by Jake Plummer in 2003. Plummer had mild success, resulting in a Wild Card spot in the playoffs, but it was clear to everyone the days of the Bronco's dominating the league were over. Plummer was then replaced by Jay Cutler in 2006 and the team would continue to slide.

While many experts considered Cutler to have the best arm since Elway, he was often referred to as having a ten-cent head. His antics and attitude created havoc on and off the field, and started to cause fans to sway their support away from the team. This would eventually lead to a deal in which Cutler would end up as a Bear and Kyle Orton would take over as the QB of the Broncos.

Things did not get much better with Orton under center and the Broncos would put twelve notches in the loss column in 2010. At the time, Josh McDaniels was the coach and a videotaping scandal was the excuse ownership was looking for to fire him. The one bright spot for the 2010 season was the somewhat successful debut of Tim Tebow. While there are still challenges with this University of Florida QB, he seems to be well on the way to becoming the true heir to the Elway throne.
