Tampa Bay Lightning History

The NHL decided to expand yet again in the early 1990s, and two Florida cities were vying for an NHL team. Tampa Bay would win out over St. Petersburg on the strength of pleas from NHL Hall of Famers, Tony and Phil Esposito. In 1992, the Tampa Bay Lightning was born. The team was mildly successful from the start, but the NHL lockout would stop any momentum the team had built in its short existence.

Once the lockout was over, many of the team's early stars left during their free agency periods. Before long, the team found itself in financial difficulties. Ownership would change hands multiple times during the 1990s. By the end of the decade, the team finally seemed grounded financially and added a minor league team to farm its own talent. This would be a decision that would pay huge dividends very soon.
By 2004, the Lightning was winning far more often than losing. That season, the team ripped through the regular season and looked towards making a deep playoff run. When the team arrived at the Eastern Conference Championship against perennial playoff contenders, the Philadelphia Flyers, many wrote them off. However, the Lightning would not only beat the Flyers and capture its first conference title, the team would also upset the Calgary Flames to win the franchise's first Stanley Cup.
