Toronto Maple Leafs History

Hockey has always been a part of Canada's sports history, and Toronto has been there from the very beginning. Established in 1917, the Maple Leafs is one of the original six teams of the NHL. However, while this city hosted an NHL team, it took some time before the current name of the team was settled upon. Prior to becoming the Maple Leafs, the team had been called the Blueshirts and the St. Patrick's.

The early years of the team were very impressive. The inaugural 1917-18 season garnered the team its first Stanley Cup. It only its fifth season, the team would have its roster once again engraved on the most cherished trophy in sports. In 1927, the team was sold to a group led by Conn Smythe and would be known as the Maple Leafs from that date forward.

Conn Smythe is one of the true legends of the NHL, and his influence on this team was evident right from the start. The 1930s and 1940s were a true time of glory for this franchise, as the Maple Leafs would win a total of six championships. Along with the Canadiens, the Maple Leafs dominated the league.

When hockey expanded, many of the old guard teams suffered in the standings. The style of play was changing and teams like the Philadelphia Flyers were using brute force to win games. While the Maple Leafs were still competitive, the days of dominating the league were over. Oddly enough, the last championship for the Maple Leafs captured was during the 1966-67 season, the last season to take place with only the "original six."
