Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, and Jerome Robbins all played integral roles in developing the music, lyrics, choreography, and story line. Robbins was also the first director of the production when it debuted in 1957. Once on Broadway, this play quickly became a success though it missed out on the Best Musical award because it was the same year "Music Man" by Meredith Willson debuted. However, this musical is far greater known by the general public and was even made into a cinematic movie in 1961.
