Utah Jazz History

The Jazz had a very dubious start in the city of New Orleans. Originating in 1974, the team had to mortgage off many of its future draft picks to land star player Pete Maravich. In addition to the lack of draft picks now in the bank, the Jazz were unable to land a permanent home in New Orleans. Finally, team management had enough and moved the team to Utah.

While the move was necessary, it also left the team cash poor. The result of this was a franchise that was unable to afford star talent. Without the financing to offer a monster contract, the team was often left off the list of premier players. It would take almost a decade from the team's beginnings before it would become financially secure and relevant in the league.

The 1980s were not only a great time for Rock and Roll, it also marked the turning point of this franchise. Superstar players were finally showing up on the radar and the team started to win more games. The first division title was captured in 1984, and the team would repeat this feat in 1989. Now featuring such players as Karl Malone and John Stockton, the rest of the league was put on notice.

This duo would highlight the true glory years of the franchise. The team would go on to win its division again in 1992, 1997, 1998, and 2000 under their guidance. Malone and Stockton would also capture two conference championships as teammates, in 1997 and 1998. Unfortunately, this was when Michael Jordan way playing as though he owned the league. The Bulls would beat the Jazz in both championship series. The 2003 season marked the last for Malone and Stockton together, but the Jazz would find its way back to the division title crown in both 2007 and 2008.
